Job Description:

Responsible for providing leadership to the Physics Department. Oversees all the operations of clinical medical physics services that are provided at Memorial Medical Center and Memorial Health System Affiliates. Oversees all aspects of the radiation therapy physics consistent with the mission and goals of the center, including clinical medical physics support, equipment calibration and commissioning, maintaining of appropriate quality assurance for equipment and treatment delivery, compliance with radiation safety, licensing issues and other pertinent regulatory requirements. The Chief Physicist will foster collaboration with the Radiation Oncology Physicians.Education:Masters or PhD degree in Medical Physics or Physics required.Licensure/Certification/Registry:

  • American Board of Radiology or American Board of Medical Physics certification in Diagnostic Radiological Physics or Therapeutic Radiological Physics required.Registration as an approved diagnostic imaging specialist or therapeutic radiological physicist by the Illinois Emergency Management Agency required.Experience:
    • Five years of experience in Medical Physics required.Experience in radiation-producing equipment installation, acceptance, calibration, and commissioning.Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
      • Membership and participation in professional development activities through the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM).
      • Excellent verbal and written communication ability required.
      • Excellent human relations skills required.
      • Provide leadership within the Radiation Oncology Physics environment. Engages in collaborative team work with Memorial staff as well as the Radiation Oncologists.
      • Responsible for program development, including the Quality Program, APEx accreditation through the American Society for Radiation Oncology, along with facilitating ongoing accreditation and development of all new services offered.
      • Ensures that doses in Medical Imaging or Radiation Oncology are accurate, precise, and consistent with national standards.
      • Manages the Quality Assurance program, modeled after the American Society for Radiation Oncology APEx standards, assisting the department in the design, documentation, implementation and evaluation of procedures that ensure proper equipment performance consistent with accurate and precise doses.
      • Provides medical physics consultation for the clinical support of Radiologists or Radiation Oncologists, as required.
      • Ensures the safe and efficacious use of radiation-producing devices and radioactive material, the Chief Medical Physicist will assist all appropriate departments in the design, documentation, implementation and evaluation of proper departmental radiation safety procedures.
      • Maintains in good standing all federal, state and local licenses and accreditations applicable to radioactive materials or radiation-producing devices and help ensure compliance with applicable rules and regulations.
      • Provide technical medical physics support in the design, development and implementation of new techniques or products that enhance the quality of patient care.
      • Meet the regulatory and patient safety responsibilities of the Radiation Safety Officer as assigned. Meet the regulatory and patient safety responsibilities of the Radiation Safety Officer as assigned.
      • Design, development and implementation of departmental quality control procedures or dosimetry procedures in support of national protocols or national standards as necessary.
      • For Radiation Oncology, review and approve each patient's radiation treatment plan for accuracy and appropriateness with necessary documentation.
      • For Radiation Oncology, generate radiation therapy dose distributions and dose calculations individually or in collaboration with the dosimetrists for the radiation treatment plan as assigned.
      • Provides backup to other Medical Physics staff within the scope of credentials as needed.
      • Maintains compliance with standards of care and regulatory requirements for accreditations maintained by Medical Imaging and Radiation Oncology.
      • Responsible for the development of programs that promote the recruitment, retention, development and continuing education of staff members.
      • Develop and implement mechanisms designed to enable and encourage staff members to pursue relevant educational developmental goals.
      • Supports staff and encourages them to act with appropriate authority over and responsibility for the work processes in which they are involved.
      • Stimulates staff to continuously improve their performance, thereby improving department and organization performance.
      • Assumes responsibility for the communication and conformance of Memorial Health System's Corporate Compliance and Ethics Program within assigned areas.
      • Performs other related work as required or requested.
