The Cardiac Surgical Step-Down Nurse Manager will provide daily
operational oversight working alongside colleagues and physicians
to reach optimal outcomes. The Nurse Manager role is responsible
for patient experience, quality outcomes, colleague retention and
recruitment, staff scheduling and payroll, and financial
stewardship of the unit. The Nurse Manager plays a crucial role to
ensure unit compliance for all Joint Commission patient care
standards. The Nurse Manager position is significant to building
physician relationships and works closely with our physician
leaders, especially hospitalists on this unit, to ensure those
partnerships remain strong and continue to grow.
The Cardiac Surgical Step-Down Nurse Manager operates within the
Memorial Medical Center and Nursing Division mission, vision,
strategic priorities and goals. Utilizing a shared leadership
philosophy, the Nurse Manager assumes 24-hour accountability for
unit management and the quality of patient care on a designated
unit(s). The Nurse Manager creates and maintains a work environment
conducive to effective communication, collaboration, teambuilding
and nursing professionalism. She/he ensures the enculturation of
the Magnet Program requirements on the unit. She/he assures that
care provided on the unit is appropriate to the age of the patients
served and that staff are competent to provide safe, quality,
evidence-based nursing care. She/he maintains positive physician
and interdepartmental relationships as well as positive employee
The Cardiac Surgical Step-Down Unit (6B), will care for cardiac,
pulmonary, vascular and thoracic surgery patients and families,
including lung volume reduction surgery and esophagectomy patients.
They will also share cardiac procedural patients with the Medical
Surgical Cardiac Unit, including post cath, stent, ablation and
pacemaker patients. Many patients have comorbidities in addition to
a primary cardiac diagnosis. All beds have on-site telemetry
monitoring. The Registered Nurse will provide assessments,
teaching, IVs, dressings, analysis of laboratory values and
medication administration and management.
- BSN required; Master's degree preferred.
- Current Illinois RN licensure required.
- Holds national specialty nursing certification in clinical area
or nursing administration, or completes within 24 months of
assuming role. Experience:
- At least three years experience in acute care nursing as a
registered nurse with demonstrated progressive
leadership/management skills. Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Demonstrated working knowledge of the ANCC Magnet Recognition
Program model and standards.
- Demonstrated understanding of nurse-sensitive quality
indicators and basic hospital/nursing regulatory requirements.
