Job Description St. Paul---s Early Childhood Center --- Teacher Qualifications Knows Jesus as Savior and understands the purpose of the Early Childhood Center. Sets a Christian example in behavior and lifestyle. Able to relate well to young children and be sensitive to the needs of others. Able to relate well and communicate well with parents. At least 19 years of age. Must have sixty (60) semester hours of credit from an accredited college or university with six (6) semester hours in courses related directly to child care and/or child development Possesses classroom organizational and leadership skills. Willing to work under and follow the mandates of the ECC Director, the St. Paul---s Lutheran ECC Board and the St. Paul---s Voter---s Assembly. Will attend continuing education classes and/or workshops concerning child development and/or care as requested by or agreed upon with the Director. Able to attend in-service training (ex. CPR, First Aid), and St. Paul---s Lutheran School staff meetings. Must clear a background check. Must meet all DCFS required standards for an ECC Teacher. Preschool Teacher Job Description Required Readings The Preschool teacher will read and sign off on the Staff Personnel Manual. The Preschool teacher will be familiar with the St Paul---s Parent Program Handbook. Responsibilities The preschool teacher will work according to the needs of the St Paul---s School, as determined by the ECC Director. The preschool teacher will arrive in a timely fashion to prepare for each class. The preschool teacher will contact the ECC Director when unable to be present at work for any reason, per the Personnel Manual. The preschool teacher will request vacation time, sick days, bereavement days, personal leave, and all other time off to the ECC Director per the Personnel Manual. Because your prompt, regular attendance is crucial to the successful operation of the school, staff who experience difficulties with punctuality or attendance will be subject to disciplinary actions according to the Personnel Manual. Supervision of children ---Line of sight--- supervision is to be used at all times. This means that the preschool teacher is in a position where all children can be seen and is physically in the same location as the children. Playground activities will be closely supervised to make sure that the children are safe. St. Paul---s school playground rules are to be followed at all times. Indoor gym activities should be closely supervised. St. Paul---s school indoor gym rules are to be followed at all times. When leaving the classroom with the children, the preschool teacher will take a communication device for cases of needed assistance. Supervision of children is a full-time job. The preschool teacher shall concentrate on the job and avoid distractions such as reading, using the telephone/cell phone, visiting with others or friends during classroom hours. Organization of the Room -- The classroom visually reflects the Christian philosophy of St Paul---s Early Childhood Center. -- Prepares the classroom for use by the children in a fashion as appropriate by age and number. -- Utilizes school materials for the classroom that are safe, clean and attractive. -- Utilizes school materials that are developmentally appropriate and adequate in number to insure choice and variety for the children. -- Utilizes available space for individual, small group and large group activities. Discipline Use love and care when disciplining children: ex. use positive suggestions, encouragement, redirection of activities, and discussion of feelings and logical consequences of behavior as outlined in the discipline plan. Maintain a positive attitude towards children. Maintain control and remain calm at all times. Yelling, screaming, shouting or loud talking while attempting to get children---s attention to gain control is counterproductive to effective discipline and is unacceptable teacher behavior. Use assertive discipline techniques that you have been taught. Be consistent, remain calm, and believe you are in charge. Rewards are often more important than negative discipline techniques. Establish rewards for positive behavior and consequences for negative behavior. Do not talk about the children or their families. Confidentiality is important. No punishment through physical contact will be allowed. Ongoing discipline concerns should be recorded and discussed with the ECC Director. Illness, Injury and Incident Reports If a child has an upset stomach, headache or other health related complaints, consult the Assistant Director who will call the parent/s. If a child has a fever, a deep cut or wound, a fall from a height, any wound possibly requiring stitches or any head injury, immediately contact the school office. If an ambulance is needed, the ECC Director or the Assistant Director shall accompany the child to the hospital. An incident such as biting or hitting should be logged in the Incident and Accident Statement and shared with the ECC Director. The appropriate notes will be sent home to the parent/s of those involved. Record Keeping The parent/caregiver will sign the attendance sheet when they drop their child/children off for preschool. The parent/caregiver will sign their child/children out on the attendance sheet when they pick them up from preschool. An Incident and Accident Statement will be provided for the preschool teacher to make notations of incidents and accidents which require first-aid or a parental phone call. An Emergency Contact Form containing the pertinent information concerning each student will be available to the preschool teacher for use throughout the work day. Emergency forms have phone numbers in case a parent needs to be contacted due to illness, incident or accident. On the emergency form are listed the names of other individuals who have the authority to pick up each child. Children may only be released to those who are listed on that form unless notified in writing by the parent. Anyone unknown to the preschool teacher is required to show a photo ID and be listed on the emergency form before picking up any child/children from the preschool. Keeps up-to-date developmental records of children in the class. Keeps accurate attendance records for each student. Curriculum Will prepare Christ-centered lesson plans for the preschool class in accordance with the planned curriculum of the day school and will make those lesson plans available to the ECC Director. Will include educational materials that are concrete, manipulative and age appropriate. Provides learning activities that stimulate the preschool children to explore, experiment, question and discover. The preschool teacher will include the use of various forms of media in the plans for the classroom. This will include to a limited degree the use of various music, computers and DVD/videos. Provides written guidelines for a substitute teacher as approved by the ECC Director. Evaluation -- Periodic written evaluations will be conducted by the ECC Director with feedback for areas of improvement. -- New employees will be evaluated after 30 days with a follow-up evaluation after 60 days. -- All employees will be given an annual evaluation on or around the anniversary of their hiring. Additional evaluations may be given as needed. -- A conference will be held to review the results of each evaluation. All parties involved will sign and date the evaluation form and it will be placed in the employee---s personnel file. -- Informal observation may be made by the ECC Director at any place or time throughout the school day. Other Reports to parents concerning the child/children---s progress. Be available for parent-teacher conferences. Be available for in-home visits as directed by the Principal. The preschool teacher will give guidance and direction to aides and volunteers as they work with the children under the teacher---s care and supervision. All other duties as assigned.
